Today is VIP's 17th birthday! :D In internet years, that’s geriatric. In human years, it's exactly one year away from legal adulthood.

I don't have any new tracks for you today, but I have something just as important: version 3.o_o. Thanks to our AI overlords, I'm confident enough to finally get VIPVGM out of beta! Working with AI has been a bit hectic, to say the least. I'm too cheap to use AI APIs or AI-assisted IDEs like Cursor. I'm also too lazy to exploit Google's free API by creating multiple accounts. So, I've only been using chatbots for help with the codebase, mainly Gemini 3 Pro in AIStudio. Thanks to its 1-million token context window, VIPVGM is small enough for it to allow me to upload the entire codebase.

Unfortunately, even the most advanced AI available makes quite a few mistakes and overlooks some context elsewhere in the codebase. So, when it fixes one bug, sometimes it creates another. The more you go back and forth, the more spaghetti code it writes. Then, you find that one line that fixes everything. It's almost like working with a human, except it doesn't insult you for being a dumbass or get offended when I point out its own dumbassery.

Note: Be aware that applying the update might make you refresh the page a few times. You may even have to close and reopen the tab.

Without further ado, here are the list of changes:

    3.o_o
    • Improved shuffling logic to avoid recently played tracks! No more will you hear the same track back-to-back unless you intentionally loop it. Up to 100 tracks can be stored in there, but it resets when you refresh. Clicking a track will also add it to your recently played tracks.
    • Improved the functionality of the Previous & Next buttons! They both will properly push tracks to your recently played tracks. Plus, the Previous button now rewinds the track if it played for at least 3 seconds, just like a real media player.
    • Throttled some button presses to prevent spamming!
    • Updated Service Worker and made update pop-ups more consistent! Code updates will make you refresh the page. The playlist will update automagically. (No need to refresh!)
    • Service Worker will now effectively cache each track that you play for at least 20% or 30 seconds, whichever's less! Up to 300 tracks may be cached depending on your storage space. After that, the oldest ones will be deleted from your cache.
    • Robust offline mode that plays cached tracks directly instead of skipping wildly! It will ignore whatever's in your Chosen or Blocked lists. The player changes color to indicate that you're offline.
    • New and improved network watchdog! This ensures the player will never stop playing and will always try to reconnect when in a poor network. No more random pauses and intervention from you.
    • Added a list of performers for each track, because I wanted to display singers and orchestra! It didn't make sense for them to be lumped in with the composers or arrangers, unless they are one of those.
    • Truncated the list of artists to two! It now displays a tooltip if there are more than two artists. Previously, I manually added "et al." if there were more than two artists.
    • New splash animations!
    • Fixed the bug where button symbols sometimes wouldn't load!
    • Streamlined the code to remove support for legacy browsers but still supports the latest non-IE browsers in Windows XP!
    • Other background improvements and optimizations!
    • Still no way to disable shuffle! Deal with it.

And now for the obligatory annual analytics.

I'm amazed you had the patience to work with LLM's for coding. I personally found them very frustrating the times I experimented with them. The moment any amount of complexity is introduced it messes up. And no amount of trying to point it out will actually fix it. At least for the times I tried.

Anyway Congratulations on keeping this up for 17 years <3

I have a lot of patience in general. But what I'd do sometimes is copy one answer from a chat, paste it in another chat, and ask it what it thinks of that answer. I then copy that response and paste into the first chat. It's like trying to have 2 bots argue with each other, like a cheap micro LLM council. I also make sure to have lots of comments for the next AI chat to read, so it understands why the previous one did what it did. Nothing worse than having the next AI engineer undo what the previous one did and break the whole damn program.

    And thanks for listening!
